** HANNAH'S STORY **

Hannah & Fluppy in happier times ...

 Tissue Warning
Hannah's arrival into Bichon Rescue's community of love
began eight weeks ago .......

Thursday, August 7th  ... first call  .......  'Hannah', an unspayed female Bichon Frise and 'Hoss', an unneutered Bichon Frise, had been dropped at a high kill shelter in southeast USA.     One of Bichon Rescue's regional vigilant eyes spotted the friendly, but unkept, bichons and immediately contacted Lynn Ramich, president of Lily's Hope Bichon Rescue, and national volunteer coordinator for much Bichon Rescue work.   Lynn quickly went to work finding a foster home in the area where the dogs were.  Needed was a safe personalized haven for at least temporarily housing until the bichons could be moved to more permanent foster.  Often this type foster is key to saving the lives of bichons in need.

Friday, August 8th . . . .  Rescue rookie Debbie Garrigus and her husband Mike, pulled the dogs from the shelter and later reported how friendly and sweet they were despite their poor condition.  It appeared that both had served as puppymill breeder dogs.   Arrangements were made to have full physicals for both and schedule each to be spayed and neutered.

Tuesday, August 12th - Dogs were taken to veterinarian for physicals, update vaccinations and Hannah was to be spayed, and Hoss neutered.     Shortly after arriving back at her office, Debbie received a phone call from her vet saying he was sorry, but both dogs tested positive for heartworms and he could not do surgery on heartworm positive dogs.     Debbie consulted with Lynn who gave permission to schedule the dogs in for heartworm treatment asap.  The longer heartworms live in the body, the more potential damage is done.

Tuesday, August 19th -  Both Hoss & Hannah received doses of Immiticide to kill their infestation of heartworms.    Debbie and Mike generously agreed to keep the dogs quiet at their home the recommended 4-6 weeks. ... through Sept 30.   Though  disappointed, Debbie & Mike, felt obligated to take the absolute best care of Hoss 'n Hannah and consequently cancelled their reservations to attend the SE USA Bichon Bash.  Excitement for Hoss & Hannah during their mandatory low-activity time could have caused serious life-threatening problems.

Fast forward five weeks .....

Monday, September 22 -  Hoss & Hannah have been under quiet house rest for five weeks and Deb and Mike have fallen head over heels in love with both.  They decided to adopt Hoss, but Hannah is a bit pushy to their Shihtzu so Hannah will go to Lynn in PA soon to be rehomed.     However ..... today Debbie noticed Hannah's body experiencing changes suggestive of a possible pregnancy.  This is NOT good!  Because Mike had surgery this same day, arrangements are quickly made to transport Hannah to Gaile Avent, Bichon Rescue Tennessee, Inc. for veterinary consultation and 24 hour watch.

Tuesday, September 23 -  3 wonderful volunteers transport Hannah to Bichon Rescue Tennessee, Inc., Symphony Hill, TN.  Thank you to Paige Ward, Sandy Postel and Margaret Hunter!!

Wednesday, September 24 -  Dr. Johnson of Town & Country Veterinary Hospital confirms pregnancy of probably one puppy.    Hannah is put on totally quiet living, high quality puppy food and vitamins.  Expect puppy within two weeks.   Bichon Rescue Community of Love is requested to begin praying for little Hannah and her unborn baby.

Dr. Cathy Johnson shows Hannah her baby on an x-ray...
Hannah thinks her baby is beautiful

Liz & Lisa congratulated me

Melissa told me how wonderful
my baby will be ... !

Concern:  Hannah's x-ray shows clear images of dead heartworms still in and around her heart ..  a reminder that the fetus was exposed to Immiticide during it's development .... and ..... Hannah's body is working hard at cleaning up dead masses ... as well as trying to grow that dear little fetus.   Please pray folks... this little dog needs all our support!

One week later ...

IT'S A BOY!
Hannah gave birth to a gorgeous 4 oz baby boy.  He's pink, he's beautiful, he's vibrant and wonderful!!  Hallelujah!! He's okay!!!!
Hannah was slow to warm up to him, but soon allowed him to nurse and all seems normal except for her restlessness and panting.   Preparations are made to continue round-the-clock vigil over Hannah and 'Fluppy' for a minimum of 72 hrs to be sure all is well.

Little Fluppy:    Tiny . . .  pure . . .  perfect

Thursday morning, October 2  - 'Fluppy is now 12 hrs old.   Hannah quiets considerably and is willing to be with her baby for as much time as needed, but is adamant that she be with a person all the time.  Given all she's been through, her foster family calms her fears and allows her to leave her baby on a heating pad ... and go out to pee/poo and get some air.  She's been through so much in the last 7 weeks, maybe she needs extra special time to make this transition.

Thursday afternoon, October 2 - During the  afternoon and early evening hours, Hannah becomes increasingly agitated, panting at an alarming rate, is in constant movement and, refuses to eat and experiences diarhea.   Bichon Rescue veteran and long time Bichon breeder consultant Dorothy Wilson of NY counsels foster parents to be extremely vigilant that Hannah doesn't kill her puppy in her highly agitated state.   Bichon Rescue volunteer/veteran vet tech Kim Campbell of Vancouver, British Columbia, constant & valued adviser to rescue volunteers throughout North America, suggests that Hannah may be experiencing eclampsia and to take it very seriously and get her calcium levels checked asap.    Emergency on-call veterinarian Dr. Davenport diagnoses mild eclampsia).  Hannah is put on oral calcium for the night and scheduled for a re-check early Friday morning on Oct. 3 ....... or an emergency entry into the clinic during the night if needed.

1 a.m. . . . Friday morning, October 3 - Hannah's panting stops abruptly ... and she becomes very attentive to her baby to the point of not wanting him out of her sight.  He likes having Mom to snuggle up to.

3 a.m. . . . Friday morning
, October 3  - Hannah's restlessness is diminishing by the hour .... but dear little Fluppy's suckle response is also diminishing.   He will take the nipple but doesn't suck with the gusto he has had.   A cold fear washes over the foster mom.    Over the next couple  hours, Fluppy's body temp begins to drop . . . . slowly but steadily ... and his color takes on a grayish tinge.  Despite two hours of valiant efforts by a team of 3 veterinarians to improve his condition,   Fluppy passed quietly over the Rainbow Bridge.

A post mortem showed that Fluppy's digestive system was not fully formed in utero ... and though he was able to suckle and swallow, the milk was not being handled normally.   Fluppy died of sepsis infection.

Our thanks to Town & Country Animal Hospital staff for their prompt and compassionate attention to this very sick fluff pup.

Was the cause of Fluppy's deformed intestinal make-up due to the drug used to treat Hannah's heartworms?  We'll never know for sure  ..... but PLEASE keep your dogs on heartworm
preventative if they are prevalent in your region.

May Fluppy's sweet little spirit be free to run in green fields
......

Note as of Saturday evening, October 4th
Hannah was very upset on Friday when we returned home and her puppy was not with us.  She searched every inch of the blankets & pillows in the area where Fluppy had been nurtured.  She cried out and remained worried & restless throughout Friday afternoon.

Today (Sat) she is doing much better.  Her panting has stopped, her appetite has returned and she is far less clingy.  She joined us on an easy walk ... and has seemed to enjoy just hanging out with the other dogs, sharing snuggles as it is her turn.

Hannah is such a happy brave little dog that she's touched the hearts of all
who have met her throughout this difficult ordeal.  She will be carefully healed
& gently nurtured until such time as the perfect home interviews for her adoption.

UPDATE:  10/8/03
Hannah's eyes are beginning to sparkle again, and she's wagging her tail and smiling.  She's a resilient little corker of a gal ... she'll make someone a lovely little friend.

UPDATE:  Monday, 10/13/03
HANNAH BLITZED!!!
Hurrrrahhhh!!!!!

Thank you all for caring about Hannah
and her baby ... and the volunteers who have nurtured them 24 hours a day.  It has been a very trying time but we have been helped tremendously by your love and prayers.

Thank you so very...very much.
